Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that convey the biggest messages. Imagine the comfort of a soft, warm blanket to a lonely senior or cold child. Now imagine the emotional impact of knowing someone cared enough to make it just for you.
In 2016, Kiawah property owner Donna Porritt approached Kiawah Cares with concerns about the great needs on the surrounding islands, which are not always met with money or goods. After several brainstorming sessions, Kiawah Cares Made With Love (KCMWL) was born, and by September 2016, the program was already making a difference.
KCMWL supporters care about the Sea Islands and show it by giving time, handmade crafts and compassionate support to the most-often overlooked demographics: children and seniors. These volunteers lead their own initiative and handcraft blankets, pillows and toiletry kits for our neighbors in need.
The first season of Made With Love was a big success and the new season starts soon. (Read more about the first season.) KCMWL offers a number of activities for those who want to help, including new expanded crafts and partnerships with local schools.
Fleece Fridays are a great way to get involved, make friends and help others, all at the same time. The new season starts Friday, Sept. 22 and runs through Friday, May 18. Meetings will be held at 23 Beachwalker Drive from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Visit the Kiawah Cares event calendar to see meetings for each month. There’s no need to RSVP for the program- just show up and pitch in!
